At this point in our series of reviews of the last year we are heading down over to South London and taking a look back at the year of Street Art & Graffiti in Leake Street. Leake Street represents London’s premier legal Graffiti location, located in the Old Vic tunnels beneath Waterloo Station, made famous as a result of Banksy’s CANS Festivals and has since gone on to become host to many a Paint Jam now. No other place in London offers such a high turnover of fresh works, with several new pieces guaranteed to be spied daily. It is quite rare in fact to pass through and not find at least someone working on their newest piece – or for that matter someone taking out someones newest piece.
Compared with 2015 this year has presented far fewer Paint Jams but this doesn’t mean we have fallen short of seeing many wonderful works, being fortunate in catching before defaced or just replaced, in a way making a good find in Leake Street one of the most rewarding. Sadly it appears that Leake Street’s days as London’s premier legal painting destinations are numbered as the tunnel is being developed in preparation for what rumour has it will be coffee shops and eateries, so this maybe the last chance we have to present an entire calendar years worth of happenings in this dingy yet magical place. Some visits are more interesting than others, but it is rare to pass through and not find something new to catch your eye, so without further ado here is a year of London Calling Blog visits to Leake Street through 2016.
