Next up in our long run of catching up with what we have been up to in our corner of South-East London over the recent few months we are taking a look at an absolutely stunning work from street artist Dan Kitchener placed up at the end of the summer in Penge for our SprayExhibition20 community street art project.
The work is titled Tokyo Dreaming and features an array of the of cultural influences which had led Dan Kitchener on his artistic journey of painting all around the world. The piece features at its centre a striking geisha portrait, who is surrounded by a series of classic Japanese film posters – Godzilla, Kung-Fu and Blade Runner – a classical depiction of a Samurai, a pair of anime characters and a series of graffiti throw-up tags – including Japanese graffiti. All depicted in Dan Kitchener’s trademark energetic and colourful modern impressionist style. It sits so nicely with Dan Kitchener’s previously painted piece on the adjoining wall, looking to past inspirations now contrasted with a glimpse into a sci-fi driven dystopian future of Tokyo on the left. Absolutely stunning and certainly a wall that commands your attention upon viewing.
We of course wish to say a massive thank you to the owners of the space who kindly donated such a beautiful spot and trusted us to work it. As well as a massive thank you to Dan Kitchener for coming back to the area to support this initiative and for leaving another vibrant and beautiful artwork in the process – we are exceptionally grateful for all your help in making this wall happen. Last but by no means least big thank you to Kevin and Street Art Atlas for all the help around this spot. This stunning work can be found in Evelina Road, Penge, and was put up with support from ourselves London Calling Blog.
