Well it certainly has been another great year for Street Art around London, and we here at London Calling Blog have very much continued to just have a blast along the way. We have had the chance to travel all over London to hunt out and witness some amazing art, we have also continued to meet a number of wonderful people, fellow enthusiasts, talented artists and those who spend their time facilitating the production of such visual treats. So as 2019 draws to a close we thought that the only way to end another fantastic year of Urban Art would be to yet again offer a selective run down of the highlights of what has happened in the capital in terms of Street Art & Graffiti this year. It has certainly been the quietest year for activity around London since we started the blog, but yet there are still so many things worth mentioning from 2019 as we have nonetheless been blessed by consistent work from the many talented and diverse London-based artists, as well as a steady stream of international talent passing through London to add something to the ever-changing walls.
It is interesting for us at this time of year to reflect back and see which artists were active around London and who visited, as well as which areas are playing host to the artworks produced. It seems that every year less areas that were once thriving in Street Art no longer are, last year we didn’t present an end of year review for Camden Town and this year we won’t be presenting one for Croydon as sadly the area is very much in decline with only a handful of artworks having been organised this last year. Shoreditch has again seen far less art produced this year than in recent years as the hoardings which now comprise the majority of painting spots in the area are coming down to unveil the new builds which are consuming the area. Brick Lane has also seen a sharp decline in the amount of artworks produced, with most notably the creative hub that was the Nomadic Community Gardens sadly closing ahead of the upcoming redevelopments set to consume this area. However it is positive to see that elsewhere in London some areas have managed to maintain existing and offer new canvases to artists and bring such artists work to new audiences and communities, with the best thing for London’s scene this last year being the reopening of the Stockwell Hall of Fame due to the tireless work of Graffiti Writer Solo One who is not only largely solely responsible for the Hall of Fame even existing over the last 20 years but has worked with the housing association and convinced them to spend 1 million Pounds protecting the 20 year tradition of Graffiti in Stockwell and created a legacy for the entire scene with this revamped space for all, which has over the last 8 months provided the space for some of the very best works we have seen all year.
