The Street Art Gallery That Was Star Yard

It seems that of late there has been a massive wave of locations that once played host to a wave of creativity and expression are being swallowed up in the name of gentrification, with one of the biggest blows recently dealt to London’s Street Art scene, the loss of Star Yard. Deriving its name from the former Seven Stars pub in front of this car park  which is currently empty, this car park over the last five years or so has very much become one of the most prominent places in the heart of London’s premier Street Art destination, Brick Lane, to see an ever changing array of art in this wonderful gallery. Certainly a prime spot for artists and writers alike, for Street Art enthusiasts, the over-abundance of Street Art tours seen all day long and its fair share of photo-shoots, Star Yard is somewhere that had a character of its own.

So it is with much disappointment that it appears that the owners Star Yard have now declared that no one is to paint in this area anymore and have installed a large metal shed which has instantaneously consumed half of the wall in the car park and further forced the cars that use the space to park in front of the five remaining walls spaces, also making it nigh on impossible to paint these spots during the day now. So it is with this in mind we thought we would take a look back at the wonderful array of Street Art and Graffiti we have encountered in Star Yard over the last three years, of which we are focusing solely on the 10 feature walls in the car park, though there is always plenty to be seen on the back of the shop and in the alleyway as you enter.

A sorrowful sight to see the current state of Star Yard, at least for now several of the locations works live on.

That’s the spirit!

Damaged but not gone, the first work to appear in Star Yard since the notice of no painting and obstruction has been placed, courteous of Falko1.

  1. Disappointing to see this iconic location being reduced and possibly closed forever but that is one of the very essences of street art and graffiti, it will move on.
Thanks to London Calling for the history tour, I wonder if in years to come the owners of the metal shed will have perspex over the Fanakapan that probably still exists on the far wall and will be charging £10 a visit to American Tourists ?
