Yesterday in Brixton Market along the Brixton Arches a paint jam on a series of boards put out for the day were utilised as a part of a community event to hold a paint jam with works from some nine artists put up in the process. The crux of the situation is that Network Rail intend to evict the current tenants of the shops along the railway arches spanning Station Road and Atlantic Road, in the name of redevelopments and make the new rates of rent so high, that it will be impossible for this community of non-chain store outlets to survive and continue from these spots in the future. So over the last month or two a series of events have been organized, with much Street Art being involved, organised through the great work and efforts of PINS, all set to draw the local community together and to gain widespread awareness of the worthy cause. Yesterdays festivities were no exception, the artists were accompanied by live music and a relentless passage of admiring passersby, all in attendance were in fine spirits, despite the rain that started alongside the artistic proceedings and set forth to provide a series of great works. The project as a whole is gaining more and momentum and support with over 23,000 signatures on the petition to stop the planned redevelopments, all down to the fine work of all involved. Stay tuned for further Street Art developments in Brixton for the #savebrixtonarches campaign.
