For our second of three posts looking back at what’s been happening on London’s Street Art and Graffiti scene we are taking a look back at what pieces we have seen around London through 2021.
We have spent much of our time working on our SprayExhibition20 project around Penge and Anerley which has kept us busy much of this last year. However we have still managed to snap a number of brilliant pieces from all around East and South London, and a little bit of North London also.
It is always interesting at this time of year to look back at the overall London scene and see which areas have declined in producing artworks and which nw ones may have appeared or been revitalised.
Brick Lane and Shoreditch still hosts the majority of the cities Street Art and Graffiti, however Shoreditch continues to diminish in size and scale of street art, with only a few sets of hoardings providing the only spots to really paint outside Brick Lane – all of which are on borrowed time as more and more of the area is swallowed up to redevelopment. Brick Lane may still be the heart of London’s scene, but this too is now set for mass redeveloping in the near future and with it something magical will be lost forever. London also saw the first London International Paste-Up Festival take place around Shoreditch, with some 200 artists contributing to the event.
Penge and Anerley has yet again proven to flourish as a destination for producing a lot of Street Art and neighbouring Crystal Palace has its own little Hall of Fame which is attracting more and more writers and artists as the months pass. The Stockwell Hall of Fame continues to be the premier legal walls in London to paint – followed by Allen Gardens off Brick Lane – with a constant turnover off high quality of Graffiti to be seen most days. What’s left of Hackney Wick’s spots to paint have been hit up a bit more regularly than in recent years and we have caught quite a few impressive works from there this year.
Beyond the geographical spread of pieces that have gone up over the year, its also interesting to look back on what artists have come and gone from London’s fluid scene. It’s fair to say that Woskerski, David Speed, Enigm, Fat Cap Sprays, WRDSMTH and Abraham.O have hit up an exceptional number of pieces over the year or since their arrival in London.
So without further ado is our look back at what we have seen around London over 2021. We look forward to seeing what 2022 brings to London’s walls.
