It certainly has taken us a while to process this post, but we are finally ready to take a look at our takeover of the former Golden Lion pub in Maple Road/Hawthorn Grove, Penge, with some 13 artists coming down to transform this wonderful building for our SprayExhibition20 community Street Art project. This former pub has been left empty for the last year and before it is converted into flats the property developers have most kindly let us have some fun with the mass of spaces available to further brighten up and instill some life onto the face of Penge.
An interesting and impressive building by any stretch we felt it was best to maintain the integrity of the original architecture and only paint direct pieces devoid of background or to fill individual sections whilst leaving the original paint work of the building running through the array of works that this building has become a gallery in its own right to. Something which each of the artists has done to such aplomb – well mostly about town anyway – utilizing the spaces presented so fantastically and each with a charm of their own, certainly a pleasure to see come together over a series of 4 weekends.
We would like to say a massive thanks to Nigel of S&B for allowing us to utilize such a baeutiful building before it is converted into flats and mostly for granting us carte blanche in creating this little temporary gallery unto itself within Penge. We would like to also thank Street Art Atlas, Spike, Kevin & Molly, Lawrence & Ben for helping out with ladder duties and all the rest – you guys made ours and the artists tasks so much easier and more fun. Lastly of course we would like to offer a big thanks to Thisone, Frankie Strand, Weardoe, HNRX, Morgazmik, DRT, Autone, Woskerski, New Art Rioter, Hunto, Sr. X, Airborne Mark & Dope for coming down to convert this wonderful canvas in to such an impressive work of art.
