Himbad’s Solo Exhibition ‘Lucid Dreaming’ At BSMT Space

Thursday night saw the opening of the latest exhibition at the BSMT SPACE in Dalston on this occasion with ‘Lucid Dreaming’ by the one and only Himbad. The show presents an excellent body of work that very much demonstrates the sheer imagination within the magical realms which Himbad’s scenes depict and the characters that inhabit them. At this point we feel it’s best the press release for the show sets the tone for the works;

“This series of 24 miniature paintings has been created using HIMBAD’s unique Sprezzatura method. Using secret martial art techniques he trains his mind to be open to the moment. The moment and the now. With Atlas like strength he keeps this mind state enabling him to so gracefully manipulate colour and form Producing master works seemingly effortlessly. Dipping his paintbrush into the great sea of the subconscious, this series reveals the hypnotic mystery and beauty of working directly from the imagination and not through widely-accessible imagery generated though a Google image search like so many ‘artists ‘ of today’s sterile age. His work is archetypal, inspired by the ancient wisdom schools, world mythology, alchemy and nature. These landscapes and figures come straight from the dream, unique and original but somehow eerily familiar. Allow yourself to be taken down the path less trodden. Don’t miss the call to adventure.”

So it is with this in mind we are presented with a myriad set of ethereal scenes and creatures depicted with a mixture of the delicate and manic, the beauty and the fun – something which we very much love about Himbad’s work. The rich textured effect within this set of works is absorbing, not to mention the wealth of intriguing creatures that are just pure Himbad. There are many great works in this show but the highlights for us here were ‘With My Thoughts I Make The World & Destroy It’, ‘Landing’, ‘Scarab Eyes See Through Lies’ & ‘No Espassy’. All round certainly a fantastic show from Himbad and the BSMT Space, a superb gallery that is continuously bringing impressive shows and talents since its opening some 18 months back.
