First up in our look back at 2024 we thought we would take a look back at what we here at London Calling Blog have proactively organised and been up to about London this last year. We are exceptionally privileged to have been able to have been involved in organising some 283 artworks this year, with 269 of those being in Penge and Anerley. We have worked with local artists and national artists from all around the country and international artists visiting from the United States, Canada, Hawaii, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, Japan, Greece, Malta, Palestine, Holland, Portugal, Spain, Tenerife, Kosovo, Scotland and Ireland.

Our SprayExhibition20 community street art project around Penge and Anerley continues to gain increased momentum, especially as it is now the biggest Street Art project in the UK with over 250 artworks currently running in SE20. Nowhere in the country has this much street art in such a concentrated area and this is all testament to how much the townsfolk have embraced and appreciated what the art brings to the area and for how blessed we are to have had such an immense array of first class artists come to paint in Penge and Anerley over the last nine years.

We conducted a further two free street art tours this year raising £226 for Unicef in the process. Big thanks to both the Penge Festival and London Festival of Architecture for including us in the respective events! Thank you to Colossive Press for helping out on collection bucket duties across the tours.

One other aspect of 2024 that stands out the most is the continued opportunity we have been given by the new owners and developers of the Blenheim Centre in the heart of Penge High Street, namely Clarion Housing – who we have worked with previously on a cluster of 20 spots within St Hugh’s Estate, Anerley since 2019 – and Hadley Property Group who are running the development of this location with a mind to utilize the top 3 floors of the multi-story car park to create the Penge Rooftop Gallery as a meanwhile project. This year we have facilitated 213 artworks across nine makeovers and to date the Penge Rooftop Gallery has hosted 891 individual artworks in 34 months. With artworks created by local street artists and graffiti writers that live in SE20, surrounding towns, London and from all around the world. We wish to offer a massive thank you to Hadley Property Group for getting us involved as a local community group active in the area. As well as being so accommodating with this fantastic meanwhile project to transform this local space into a truly unique and original urban art gallery for the local community and visitors to enjoy.
As is always the case we couldn’t do what we do here without the help we receive from good friends we have made during the last nine years and this last year was no exception. It is only with the invaluable help some people selflessly provide to help and do whatever it takes to keep the projects we run going. Firstly thank you to all the artists for coming down to paint spaces big and small to brighten up walls around the city. Secondly thank you to all the residents and businesses for donating spaces to let the artists work their magic. South-East London wouldn’t be looking so good without all your trust, support and time. A big thank you to New Art Rioter for all the help and patience with everything behind the scenes.

Massive thank you to Kevin for all the help with ladders, buffing and running around Penge and Anerley so that walls can be painted and people can enjoy it. Another massive thank you to Street Art Atlas for all the help throughout the year from buffing walls to driving artists around town. We are exceptionally grateful to our Penge Street Art Crew squad of Kevin, Street Art Atlas and M Frenchi, for constantly going above and beyond to help the artists and ourselves out around SE20 – as well as for all the laughs along the way. A lot of what has continued to be achieved about SE20 this last year has been made possible and so much easier through Kevin’s, Street Art Atlas’ and M Frenchi’s selfless help to the project!

We would like to say a big thank you to Community Magazine SE20 for continuing to allow us to share the art of Penge and Anerley with the town in their superb publication – which has led to people providing us more spaces to paint.
