During the summer London saw Spanish artist Pejac take to the street to drop two artworks, one in North London and one in East London. We managed to go see the work in East London and we have to say it is one of the best artworks we have seen this last year. It has been eight years since Pejac placed up some pieces in London, and then they were a series of installations as part of his Downside Up run of works. Having started painting on walls after the attitude of his art teachers’ annoyed and galvanized him into action. Since then Pejac has expanded his artistic output to a variety of mediums beyond his paintings and in the process has gone on to paint around the world in places including: Moscow, Paris, Istanbul, London and Milan.
This piece titled Icarus marked the first painting we have seen in person from this diverse and talented artist, it also provides ample demostration that sometimes the smallest of artworks can evoke the most powerful of responses. The work to us acts as metaphor for humanity, moving forward as a whole whilst simultaneously leaving so many behind, drawing parallels between the fable of Icarus who flew to close to the sun and crashed to the Earth as a result. The level of detail in this impressionist work is immense and the piece evokes such a sense of fear and panic at being left behind, whilst simultaneously heading towards the uknown. The incredible artwork below can be found on Ellsworth Road, Bethnal Green.
