Last month London received a visit from Sheffield born, but Portugal based, street artist Rocket01 who took to Southey Street Brewery to leave an absolutely beautiful work titled Future World. It has been five years since Rocket01 last painted in Penge, so we were delighted when plans were made for something fresh from the artist to be dropped about our hometown, and he really didn’t disappoint.
Rocket01’s work is instantly recognisable as his own, with a distinct colour palette inspired by the natural world and rich in green, turqouise, red and pink hues. Through his art Rocket01 creates surreal otherworldly scenes exploring themes of environmentalism, nature and technology, often with a serene and stark vibe about them. Animals are often set along side humans offering a glimpse of how we may co-exist in the future or in another dimension.
Future World depicts a female subject with flowing pink hair, set wearing a glass helmet with a goldfish swimming in the helmet’s earpiece. Set on the plant vine next to the painting’s protagonist is a magpie. The piece is infused with regular symbols and imagery often prevalent in Rocket01’s work, namely the CND badge and green emerald.
We would like to say a massive thank you to Rocket01 for taking the time to visit SE20 on their visit to London in order to support our community artistic initiative and for leaving this absolutely beautiful artwork for ourselves and the locals to enjoy in the process. We would also like to say a big thank you to the Southey Street Brewery for their continued generous hospitality when artists paint at their premises. Big big thanks to Kevin and Street Art Atlas for all the help with this wall. This striking work was placed up in Penge High Street, Penge, with support from ourselves London Calling Blog for SprayExhibition20.
