2017 – A Year Of Street Art In Penge

This evening we are taking a look at year of Street Art in Penge, something we have to say which has been a real pleasure to look back on. Since the blog’s inception three years ago now we have began delving into various projects the most rewarding of which has been the organization of Street Art in our hometown of Penge through our SprayExhibition20 Community Street Art Project.

In 2016 we were able to facilitate some 19 works across 16 spaces, and over the course of 2017 we have managed to paint a further 90 works across some 84 spots around town, its only fair to say that this year the community of Penge has fully embraced the addition of some creativity to the town and are providing more spaces than we ever really hoped to get – very much a testament to the outstanding work of the 47 artists who have now painted in SE20. Indeed all of this has been made possible due to the incredible support of the local community who have provided spaces to paint, ladders, food and drinks and even in some cases, paint. Community spirit combined with the generous support of artists who have given their time to paint for free have certainly added a splash of colour and life to the town.

What a year its been, with a steady stream of painting consistently throughout the year with the project venturing into an ever increasing number of new corners of town, the most notable of which was been presented with some spots in Penge High Street and Southey Street, really forcing the magic of what has been happening into the towns consciousness. It is quite difficult to pick highlights from the year – without bragging there is so much choose from – so among the moments that stand out which have been a result of the paintings was the exceptionally fun interview we were asked to do for Radio Penge and being provided the chance to contribute to the Community Magazine SE20. As for the murals its only fair to say that the wall that has the most impact on and for the town would be the outstanding piece by Dreph in Southey Street, which due to the well deserved attention the artist received for his You Are Enough series around London, really started to establish Penge has a place to see great Street Art, with this work being shown in the Guardian, on ITV News and Reuters Global News Agency, making front page of the Huffington Post as well as providing a back drop to music videos and fashion shoots.

Additionally the time we spent painting the former Golden Lion prior to the current redevelopments was an absolute pleasure to be given the chance to work such an enormous and interesting space – props to the owners for the opportunity and more so for being OK with the surprisingly large number of complaints received about this takeover. The days we spent with Falko1 and Dotmasters where each artist came and painted five pieces around town in a single day were certainly an experience, as was taking part in TRUST.iCON’s recent exhibition Street Artist exhibition in London which saw him place up 11 brilliant additions to spots around Penge over a month. We have also been able to facilitate artists visiting from Belgium, Holland, Austria, Spain, South Africa & Colombia with spots around town demonstrating that Penge is becoming an international destination to come and paint whilst visiting London.

Thank you to everyone involved in the project so far, business owners, residents and artists alike, SE20 wouldn’t be looking so good without all your trust, support and time. Thank You to New Art Rioter for all the help with ‘everything’. Firstly thank you to all the businesses as well as to all the residents for providing us with spaces to let the artists work their magic. Secondly and equally thank you to all the artists for coming down to paint spaces big and small and brighten up the area. Thank you to Community Magazine SE20 for allowing us to share the Art of Penge with the town in their superb publication – which has led to people providing us more spaces to paint. As well as thank you to M_Frenchi & Spike_ML, Street Art Atlas, Tanya Nash, Mark Hat, London_By_Zappa & Lewis Querelle for taking the time to come down to Penge and share some of the work we have been doing in our local area to the wider world. So without any further ado here is a year of Street Art in Penge.

Lastly we would like to add a few big thanks to Lawrence & Ben for providing ladders whenever we have needed them and of course to Kevin & Molly for also providing ladders as well as expert advice on repair works that have been required prior to paintin. Shouts to Mark Hat for bringing Coloquix to the town, to M_Frenchi for helping out when we couldn’t be around when DZIA visited, to Street Art Atlas for the selfless paint run across town so the artist could complete the work on the day, and to Spike_ML who like all of the previous few friends mentioned helping us run ladders around town and all the other little tasks that need to occur behind the scenes in order to make this all happen. Your help is immensely appreciated and its only fair to say that Penge is looking all the much better for all your help.

So without further ado here is our year of Street Art in Penge, it’s been a blast guys and we for one can’t wait to see where this is all heading in 2018!
